I have delved into the advertising/marketing world for over a year now, gathering as much information and insights as possible. Soon into my business I realized that I needed more than just a great product to succeed and that if I wanted my business to pull through these tougher times that I would need to focus on first self educating myself on how to market my business and then implementing systems to build a strong foundation. To be honest, I think I have reached information overload. I have too much in my head, and too little implementation. I have become so overwhelmed that it is almost paralyzing. So, going into my third year of business, I promised myself that I would now begin implementing systems in all aspects of my business. So...I thought that there would be no better way to jump start this endeavor than by spending 2 days with Michael and a small group of like minded people (in terms of us all be entrepreneurs). What was the experience like emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually?
The experience was extremely grounding for me as well as relieving. I felt like at the end of the two days it was only in my best interest to begin letting go, letting go of any fears or anxiety that I have about growing my business and that I really needed to enjoy and embrace the journey of building a successful business--because there really isn't a "getting there"--once you get there you are developing something else and starting over again. Going into the 2 days I thought that I didn't need to work on myself as a person but actually left feeling that that was the most important thing for me to do in my business and then much else would follow. I was very familiar with Michael's work going into the 2 days so I did not feel overwhelmed intellectually--which was a good thing! This time with him helped me get clarity and a deeper understanding of his Book Yourself Solid system. It takes time to internalize what you really need to do. I felt so connected with everyone at the workshop even though we were all very different from one another and in different places of our business development. We all had dreams and a sense of dedication--we were dedicated to and passionate about the work we were doing or going to do. It was a very intimate experience and one to always treasure. Moments like those are hard to come by.

What did I feel Michael was like personally/ What is it like to spend time with him?
I can not think of a better person to spend time with. Michael is genuine, brilliant, open-hearted, professional, authentic, and direct. Instantly I felt welcomed in his home. I wanted to hold onto every word that he said whether it was during a structured time or just hanging out in his kitchen. It is actually like a breath of fresh air to be with him because unlike so many of the other marketing "gurus" he is "on the mark" with all his thinking without all the hype (that makes you want to throw up!). It is so reassuring to know that one can highly succeed in what they do and still remain real. With Michael there is no game, deception, or pressure. It would take a minor book to adequately express all of the things that the two-day session meant to me and my business partner. But, I will spare you that for now. I am a software developer who is starting a new business for the first time in my life. It is a daunting task just to think about it and I needed some insight into the process of how to approach this. I had been introduced to Michael Port’s work via my business partner Eric and when Michael’s small group event was announced, we both signed up.

I was hoping to get some type of roadmap or plan or template from which I could use to contribute towards our business goal. As a technologist, this is a common and effective technique for sharing knowledge. I looked forward to coming home with a plan that Michael had crafted for our business success.

The coaching event was set in a casual home environment: Michael, four of his excellent coaches and eight of us (that’s 5 highly-skilled and experiences coaches for 8 people), sitting around a large dining room table in Michael’s beautiful house. Michael and the coaches immediately made us feel welcome and comfortable. The two day event felt more like a bunch of friends getting together to discuss the various successes and problems that we faced in each of our endeavors. It also felt a bit like a group therapy session (in a good business-like way), with Michael giving us direction and helping us discover answers that we all knew were inside us, but which we needed to learn how to bring out so we could act on them.

Toward the end of the first day, I felt so inspired that I knew I was qualified to be a member of a business community, although I needed to learn much about how to actually realize my goals. The coaches even worked with Eric and me on communication skills, both between Eric and me and with business associates. All in all, it was an eye opening experience.

When the two-day event was over, I knew that starting and running a successful business was well within my abilities. Michael explained how to think about what I needed to do rather than just telling me what to do. He laid down the foundations of planning, making and nurturing contacts, making a name and reputation for us and the business and how to support it and grow it. He made me feel that the skills to succeed were already available to me and showed how to apply them, judiciously and in the proper sequence so that each small success became the foundation for the next action. This to me represented a geometric, rather than linear, growth; each step doubling the chances of success rather than just adding 1 each time.

Michael is a real person. I was a bit wary of getting involved with a “guru” type, but within minutes, I realized that this is definitely not who Michael is. He is a friendly and able teacher: easily approachable, warmly personable and extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. He is well read and is constantly pointing us to other sources of info and inspiration, many of which he has used in his own professional growth. His experiences have spanned many fields and he is able to bring pieces of all of them together into his mentoring. He constantly challenged us, asking questions of us and forcing us to think. He also answered each question asked of him, sometimes turning the question back to the group to answer.

After spending two days with Michael, I feel as if we have a friend that we can turn to for motivation, guidance and support.

One part of the workshop was to make a list of lifestyle goals in addition to financial and business goals. That exercise gave me insights on how I will live my life. All in all, the pace of the workshop was comfortable, the other participants interesting and committed, the small group was invigorating and the other coaches stimulating (Michael surprised us by flying in a coach for every two people in attendance to work with us while he was in private sessions with other participants.)

It can be scary looking at what needs to happen, but at the same time very freeing. Spiritually, I knew that I was seeking an even greater connection to the Universe, and that all of my goals are present to me now. And as I connect with that intuitive wisdom, the answers come to me, and I continue to prosper in my work.

What did I feel Michael was like personally/What it’s like to spend time with him?
Michael is a gem. His intellect, compassion and honesty were impressive. He doesn’t take on the “guru” mentality, he is just himself.
