Web designers... who's the best?

It's a question that I get weekly, if not daily.

I think my web designers and programmers are "the best." If you want them you can have them too. Just email them and say, "Michael Port said you were "the best."

They're in Romania. I started outsourcing my design and programming work years ago after I got fed up with paying outrages fees for substandard service in New York City to designers that acted like I was lucky they took my business (Don't mean to offend, just my experience). And, yes, their English is perfect.

I get service that would make the Ritz Carlton staff take notice. I speak to them on skype (for free) at a moments notice. I get great rates. And, most importantly, as you can see from the design of my blog, I get top-notch web design and programming talent.

Bottom line: they make me feel important. I like that. I bet you do too.

Why Did we Change the Homepage?

Someone recently wrote to Michael asking why we changed the homepage.  Originally, Michael's homepage was a long sales letter (one of the pages on the site printed out to be 15 pages).  The person asked what caused the change to today's state, which is subject focused organization.  Here's the message that was sent:

"[We] noticed that you've recently changed the format of the Book
Yourself Solid sales page from being a long sales letter format to something
rather shorter and broken out into specific pages that people can click
through to from a menu on the top of the page.

We're wondering what the reasoning was behind this. I believe I speak for
both of us when I say that we're really not fond of the typical long sales
letter format, and that we like the looks of this much, much better.
Knowing that you are on top of all the latest sales and marketing research,
I'm really curious about the change and would love to hear what's behind it."

Michael and I popped open the champagne to celebrate!  The smarter marketing tools page hit page one for one our top keywords!

OK, really we didn’t open any champagne, because we always meet at 6 am!  That’s a bit early for that kind of celebrating.  But, we did share our excitement and kick around e-mails with a lot of exclamation marks!

This is the way it works. When you select great keywords and properly optimize your pages, you will reach page one.  The exciting thing is that we’ve only just begun optimization.  There’s still much more in the works.

Now that we reached the top of Google, it’s time to talk about expectations: 
Typically when you go live with your optimization changes, you’ll get the best rankings at the beginning.  Just because we reach the top, doesn’t mean we’ll stay at the top from the beginning.  And that’s exactly what happened… more about that in my next post.

It’s been a while since I posted, that’s because we’ve been so busy.  We’re now optimizing the page copy and getting new pages out on the Book Yourself Solid site. You’ll notice the new home page went live!  It looks great, drives customers to various sections of the site and highlights the different services and resources that Book Yourself Solid has to offer.

There’s a lot to optimizing page copy, it’s the longest step in optimizing a website, so in the next few posts I’m going to focus on one tip for optimizing your page copy.  This post is on page length.

Here’s the second of a two-part post on reporting. I gave you a nice break since my last reporting post. Now it’s time to talk about finding your rankings.  This is what many people want to truly know – where does my site rank in Google?

It’s simple to find your rankings:  Just go to Google (or your search engine of choice), do a search, find your website and count how many positions down that you appear.  If you’re on page five, your site will rank somewhere between positions 41 and 50, because each search results page on Google has 10 listings. 

What happens if you can’t find your site? Well, you may not be listed. But don’t despair - just relish in the thought of the mountains of opportunities you have in your future!

Now it’s time to talk about reporting. Most people’s eyes glaze over at the mere thought of reporting… but I’m going to do my best to keep you interested.  Plus, I broke it into two parts – so you get to feel the reporting love twice!

When we began, I asked Michael in what will make you feel our search engine marketing services have been a success, his response:

“When I have secured a top 5 ranking for at least 5 of my primary keyword phrases.”

Easy enough… Except, those primary phrases are extremely competitive.  So I have my work cut out for me.  That success won’t happen over night.   In the meantime, I have to find other ways to make Michael happy… just kidding.  The truth is that he can still glean high volumes of traffic from search engines, even without reaching this goal. In fact, most search marketing experts do not rate their success criteria on rankings alone and that’s going to be our approach – though, don’t get me wrong, we’re still going after that initial goal.

Search Marketing Challenge: Page Writing Strategy

We're still in motion with optimizing BookYourselfSolid.com.  This week, Michael has been wrapping up the final page design with his web designer. I've been in the loop providing feedback to them both, and I must say that the new homepage is awesome!  You'll be in for a treat when it goes live.  I'll check with Michael to see if we can give a sneak-peek via the blog. By the way, I'm impressed with Michael's designer -- he's one to check out if you're thinking about a new website.

Meanwhile, we have a good idea of the sections and headlines that will be on the page, so Michael can now begin copy writing, even though the final page design is still in the works.  We caught up for a very quick chat about a page writing strategy.  I e-mailed him a list of keywords to incorporate and he is now ready to start incorporating them into the new copy.  The new home page is going to have less content, highlight the Book Yourself Solid System and guide you straight to a few of the most valuable resources that Michael has available on the site - and, of course, they'll be optimized for high rankings.

When I met with Michael to deliver results of the website inspection, I also delivered the results of the usability audit.  The usability audit is when I take a look at your website to determine how usable it is and look for how it can be improved. Delivering these results can be difficult, particularly when it comes right after the client has just spent a lot of time on a completely new website – which is the case with Michael.

First, I get into the mind of someone that would be looking for what the client has to offer. For Michael I said, “What type of person would be typing his keywords – business coaching, marketing coach, get clients, lead generation, etc.?”  As I thought about this person, I wrote down the following:

  • I’m in research mode.
  • I’m looking for meat.
  • I have a problem that needs to be solved – the problem is that my business isn’t performing as well as I think it should be.
  • Likely I’m stressed, because no matter what I do, it isn’t enough.
  • I don’t likely have funds to invest; therefore I’m not looking to spend my money.
  • In essence, I’m looking for free advice.

Then I think about how a site could make me happy. As I thought about it, I decided that a site would need to offer:

Michael and I met earlier this week to review the results of the website inspection. This is where I “opened the hood” and checked out the coding to see what may cause issues for search engines reading his website. I was also looking for additional things that could be done to make it easier for robots to read his website, understand what it’s about and find each page.

The good news is that it’s in very good shape. Michael was fortunate to have partnered with a website designer that codes in a way that is pretty search engine friendly.  There are no major roadblocks, and I found a few opportunities to make the site more search engine friendly. The good news is that they are easy fixes.
